They say there comes a time you start over from zero, even from minus

They say there comes a time in life when you have to start everything over from zero, even from below zero. I used to hear that and not think much of it.

I have a habit of asking older people, those in their forties to sixties, what the hardest part of their life was. Almost all of them tell a similar story.

The common thread is the same: a wrong decision, the wrong people, being too naive, trusting too easily. One wrong step, and they had to walk a long way back, or start again from minus.

For me, it turned out to be true as well. I have been at the point of starting from zero, even from minus. And what hurt most, I lost the trust of the people closest to me.

The part that stung most was the rejection. Even people I had helped when they needed it turned away when I had nothing left.

That taught me about circles. Not everyone around you is the same. Some are just acquaintances, some are friends, and a few are the kind you can truly count on. Knowing which is which matters far more than I used to think.

So being selective about who you keep close is not arrogance, it is protecting yourself. Keep your inner circle small and honest. The people who stay when you have nothing are the ones worth the most.

Starting from zero is hard. But it does one good thing: it shows you clearly who your real circle is. And if you still have even one or two honest people, you are already far richer than you realize.
